I’ve dealt with underperformance before but would not tag a team member as an underperformer.
There was this one time a developer was consistently missing deadlines. I decided to have a friendly one-on-one chat to understand what was going on. Turns out, he was overwhelmed with some personal stuff and the workload.
I approached it constructively by working with him to break down his tasks into more manageable chunks and paired him up with a more experienced team member for support. I made sure to communicate to the team that we were focusing on helping each other out and improving our overall performance.
We also had a team retrospective where we talked about how we could better support each other without singling anyone out. This helped to maintain a positive team spirit.
Over time, the developer's performance improved, and the team appreciated the supportive environment. By handling it with empathy and emphasizing teamwork, we kept the team morale high and productivity steady.
